Imagine the price of a competent answer to almost any question falling by a thousandfold in a decade. Not a perfect answer — a competent one, the kind a diligent junior professional might produce after a morning's work. Now imagine that price falling by another thousandfold.

Every institution we have inherited — the professions, the universities, the credentialing bodies, the pricing of advice — was built in a world where expertise was scarce, slow to acquire, and locked inside individual heads. The scarcity was not incidental. It was the foundation.
What scarcity built
Consider how a profession works. A body of knowledge is gathered, formalised, and taught. Entry is gated by examination. Practitioners are licensed, and the licence is worth something because it is hard to get. Fees reflect the years required to earn it. Institutions form to protect the standard, and, not coincidentally, the scarcity.
None of this is cynical. Gating expertise protects the public from incompetence. But it also means that the value of a professional has been tightly coupled to the difficulty of replicating what they know. When that difficulty collapses, the coupling breaks, and it is not obvious what remains.
What abundance reveals
Here is a first attempt at an answer: what remains is judgment, and judgment was always the point.
A competent answer is not the same as a good decision. The gap between them is filled by things machines are still poor at and people are still needed for: knowing which question to ask, understanding what the answer will cost if it is wrong, taking responsibility for acting on it, and being the person who can be asked why. Abundant cognition does not eliminate that layer. It exposes it. In a world where anyone can get a plausible legal opinion in seconds, the value of a lawyer lies precisely in the parts of the job that were never about producing the opinion.
Scarcity was never the point of expertise. Judgment was.
This has consequences for how professions will restructure. Expect them to re-anchor on accountability rather than knowledge. The question will shift from "do you know this?" to "will you sign this?" — and the second question is worth more.
The uneven arrival
Abundance will not arrive evenly. It arrives first wherever verification is cheap. Software is the clearest case: a program either runs or it does not, and tests can check it. Mathematics, structured analysis, and any task with a crisp definition of correctness will follow. Fields where correctness is contested, slow to observe, or bound up with values — medicine, policy, education — will change more slowly, not because the machines are worse at them, but because we are worse at checking.
This creates a peculiar map of the near future. Some industries will experience abundant intelligence as a flood; others as a slow tide. The politics of the transition will be shaped by who finds themselves on which shore.
Three things to get right
Access. Cheap cognition is only a public good if it is actually public. There is a version of this future in which the best systems are metered behind expensive gates, and the abundance is felt mainly by those who already had access to expertise. Avoiding that outcome is a policy choice, not a technical one.
Accountability. As answers become cheap, the scarce resource becomes someone who is accountable for them. Institutions should be designed so that the accountable person is identifiable, adequately informed, and genuinely in control — not a rubber stamp on machine output.
Education. If the point of expertise is judgment, then education must teach judgment: how to evaluate an answer, how to ask a better question, how to know what you do not know. Curricula built to transmit scarce knowledge will need to be rebuilt around the skills that abundance rewards.
The optimistic case
